A country of its time, with its sights set on the future
Since the crisis in 2007, which brought the country to its knees, followed by the intervention of the Troïka (the International Monetary Fund, the European Commission and the European Central Bank) between 2011 and 2014, Portugal has succeeded in turning its fortunes around. Today it is experiencing renewed economic growth. More dynamic, more modern and more enterprising than ever, it has become the European country where anything is possible.
Lisbon has always been at the cutting edge of new communication technologies, and at the forefront of innovation. It is no accident that the city has been chosen by the Web Summit, the largest tech gathering in the world, to host its forthcoming series of conferences, featuring more than 600 speakers and participants from more than 160 countries. In a recent feature, The Guardian predicted that the Portuguese capital would be the next tech capital.
Portugal has learnt the lessons from the crisis and is using ideas to generate economic value for the country.
In a bid to tackle the energy challenges of tomorrow, and cultivate respect for the environment, Portugal has a long-standing commitment to investing in renewable energies: 28% of the country’s energy derives from renewable sources, one of the highest figures in the EU. Once again, it is no accident that Lisbon was shortlisted for the 2019 European Green Capital Award. Calliope Portugal is playing its part in this initiative.
A city with a European heart and an international soul, Lisbon has hosted several EU presidencies, the most recent of which led to the adoption of the Lisbon Treaty. It was Laurence Corréard, Calliope’s member for Portugal, who was selected to provide the conference interpreting services. During the six-month presidency, she organised the interpretation for dozens of conferences, ensuring that each team delivered the same high standards of quality, rigour and professionalism.
Lisbon is the seat of two European Union agencies, which have also entrusted Laurence Corréard with providing their interpretation services, the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) from 2009 to 2014, and the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) since 2009. The latter has a very extensive language regime, requiring interpretation in all the EU’s languages, but the EMCDDA knows that it can count on the expertise of Laurence Corréard and the Calliope network.
Lisbon’s present status, not only as an eco and tech capital, but also as a gastronomic centre – a plus for food lovers – has really put it on the map, winning it a number of leading destination awards. Have you considered Lisbon for your next meeting? Whether it is a conference, a meeting or a seminar, Laurence Corréard will be able to help you with your preparations, supplying translations, conference interpreters and technical equipment. Whether you are a start-up, an SME seeking international outlets, or a multinational, Calliope Portugal is your partner of choice.
